It was a sultry summer evening, and the streets were eerily quiet as I hailed a taxi to take me home after a long day at work. As I got into the taxi, the driver, an elderly man with a kind face, greeted me warmly and he started driving towards my destination.
As we drove, the driver suddenly turned to me and said, “You know, today is the Ghost Festival.” I nodded, vaguely aware of the festival’s significance in Chinese culture. “I have a story to tell you,” he continued. “Something strange happened to me on this day, a few years ago.”
Intrigued, I leaned forward, eager to hear his story.
The driver told me that on that particular day, he had picked up a passenger, a young woman dressed in a traditional Chinese cheongsam. She asked to be taken to Babaoshan cemetery, a location that the driver knew all too well. Babaoshan was the final resting place for many famous politicians, military leaders, and celebrities in China.
As they drove towards the cemetery, the driver noticed that the woman seemed oddly silent and distant. Her face was pale and her eyes were fixed on some distant point in the distance.
After a while, the driver tried to strike up a conversation with the woman, but she didn’t respond. He tried again, and this time, the woman slowly turned her head towards him and whispered, “I need to go to Babaoshan.”
The driver was shocked to hear her voice, which was faint and barely audible. He looked at her closely, trying to discern any sign of illness or distress, but he couldn’t see anything unusual.
As they reached the entrance of the cemetery, the driver asked the woman if she wanted him to wait for her. She didn’t reply, just put some money on the passenger seat and simply got out of the car and started walking towards the cemetery gate.
The driver watched as she disappeared into the darkness, feeling a sense of unease wash over him. He waited for a few minutes but the woman didn’t return. As he looked around, he suddenly noticed that there was no one else in sight, and the atmosphere around him seemed to be heavy and oppressive.
Just then, he heard a faint sound, like someone crying in the distance. He looked around, trying to locate the source of the sound, but he couldn’t see anything. As the crying got louder and more persistent, the driver realized that it was coming from the direction of the cemetery.
Filled with dread, he got out of the car and cautiously walked towards the cemetery gate. What he saw there made his blood run cold.
In front of him, he saw the woman he had dropped off, standing in front of a grave, crying uncontrollably. The grave was old and overgrown with weeds, and the name on the headstone was barely legible. The driver approached the woman, trying to comfort her, but as he got closer, she suddenly vanished into thin air.
The driver was left standing there, alone in the darkness, with nothing but the sound of his own racing heartbeat to keep him company. As he got back into the car and drove away, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had just experienced something truly otherworldly.
But the weirdest thing did not occur yet.
The next morning when the driver woke up, he found himself sleeping in his car, browsing around the surroundings. he surprisingly discovered that his car had parked in the underground parking of Guomao shopping mall, which is really popular shopping mall for the young people in Beijing, but he could not recall about how he could park here.
Looking back, he remembered what he had experienced last night, still felt chilly on his bones. then he started his car to leave the parking lot, but when he paid the parking fee. the next thing was entirely out of his understanding.
The toll collector charged him 100 yuan, which was the price for the whole night. it was impossible he thought and consulted the toll collector about when he had parked the car. she browsed about the cameras for sometime and told him that It was yesterday afternoon that he stopped his car and didn’t leave halfway.
He got totally confused and shocked upon hearing this, he assumed that everything was dreamed last night, but soon he noticed he was wrong. He found that the car was almost running out of gas, but he filled it up yesterday afternoon, meanwhile he saw the Hell money on his passenger seat, he suddenly remembered that it was the woman who put the money on it last night, how could it change into the Hell money? all things he had met made him feel quite frightened, he was not able to explain every single details.
