Laughter of the Fairy Snake a Summer Night in Cangzhou City

In the summer of 1992, I lived in a small village in Cangzhou City, China. One day, I woke up my two-year-old son and took him to work in the field with his grandfather and me. We were weeding the farm, but my son was feeling sleepy and unhappy.

Suddenly, we heard the crowing of a rooster in the north of the field. It seemed odd because the field we were on was far from the village, and there shouldn’t have been any chickens nearby. People said that the wasteland where the rooster had crowed was haunted, but we didn’t think much of it since it was daytime.

After some time, my son’s grandpa went to the wasteland to see if there was a rooster or not, but he found nothing. We continued to work until it was pitch black, and then my father-in-low took my son home while I stayed to finish the work.

Later that night, I was woken up by a strange laughter that lasted for around seven or eight seconds. It sounded like hands squeezing cans, and it made me feel unsettled. The next day, I told my husband about the laughter, but he said that he didn’t hear anything.

The second night, I heard the laughter again and woke up my husband. This time, he heard it too, and we switched on the light. It was exactly twelve o’clock at night, and my heart started racing. I was sure that the sound was coming from the eastern room.

For the next few nights, the sound continued to come at midnight, and it made me scared and unnerved during the day. My husband and I checked the eastern room but found nothing. One night, my husband decided to sleep in the room with a knife, hoping to ease my fears. In the middle of the night, he saw a creature that resembled a combination of a person and a snake standing in front of the door. He grabbed the knife and wanted to stab it, but before he could, the creature quickly left the room.

After that night, I never heard the laughter again. Some people told me that it might have been a fairy snake protecting my family, but I don’t believe it. It felt like a nightmare that almost drove me crazy, and I still feel scared when my husband brings it up.
