The Grave Robber’s Curse: A Terrifying Ghost Story from Sichuan Province

Growing up in Sichuan Province, I had heard countless stories about supernatural events. One such incident occurred in 1996 when I was just nine years old. I was visiting my great-grandmother’s house with my grandmother during summer vacation. That night, I shared a room with my cousin who was ten years older than me and had a bad temper.

In the middle of the night, I saw my cousin preparing to go out with a basket on his back. I asked him where he was going, but he ignored me and told me to go back to sleep. I insisted on going with him, but he refused and left. When he returned in the morning, I noticed that his shoes were covered in mud. Later that day, my aunt asked where my cousin was, and I told her that he had gone out the previous night and returned in the morning.

However, later that day, my cousin fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. The doctor informed us that he could not be saved. We were all devastated, uncle squatted down next to the door of ICU in sadness, and aunt began crying desperately. at this time my father also rushed to the hospital, and asked me the situation about my cousin, then he suggested that we seek the help of an elderly man who was said to have the ability to drive away evil spirits.

We took my cousin back to his home, and my father brought the old man to the house. The elderly man wore a Taoist robe and looked like in his 60s with reddish glow in his face, around 170 cm tall. as soon as seeing him, my aunt and uncle greeted together and chatted with him. he said in smile that ‘it is nothing. let me first check out the boy.’

When the elderly man saw my cousin then spoke in a curse tune that the ghost was too fierce and wicked, then he walked towards a basket, that was put in a corner of the room, and pointed at it saying that the boy was really ridiculous, and dared to dig up a grave, that ghost followed him returning back already. he continued that if tonight I could not deal with it, probably tomorrow would be the boy’s funeral. Soon the elderly man set up an altar while instructing women and children to leave the room.

The rest of this story I was told by my father.

My father said that when the elderly man began to cast out the evil, all of the sudden in the room there was formed a wind, then he recited a mantra and painted a spell, and stuck it on cousin’s forehead. then he repeated the mantra several times, the wind stopped. and then he put the spell into a bowl handing it to my father, and instructed that let father take this bowl out of house and find a crossroads and lit the spell in the bowl, then put the bowl upside down on the ground, and left. he added that whatever he heard behind his back, did not turn. if he turned, the boy would die.

My father followed the instructions and found a crossroads to light the spell in a bowl, but as he was about to leave, he heard a voice calling his name. He hurried back to the house, and the elderly man assured him that everything was fine.

The next morning, my cousin had miraculously recovered, and he told us that he had gone out to dig up an ancient grave in the mountains. He had found a jade ring, but when he touched it, he was hit on the head and blacked out. He woke up in the hospital.

We were all amazed by the elderly man’s abilities and grateful for his help. We never forgot the terrifying experience and how we narrowly escaped tragedy.

Looking back, I realize that the supernatural events in Sichuan Province are not just stories but can be real and dangerous. I will always remember this experience and warn others to be cautious when dealing with the unknown.
